CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations on reaching the point in your training where you are being considered to test for your next rank. Even with Martial Arts being a common practice in our environment, being considered for the rank of black belt is a fantastic testimony to your hard work and dedication.

Ultimately, your eligibility for testing will be based upon your time of practice and your performance level. Going forward, it is highly recommended that you work out in as many regularly scheduled classes and take advantage of as many extra classes that your dojo offers (as possible).

Increase Your Regular Training (Practice vs. Training)

This is not the time to maintain your current pace.

There is a difference between practicing and training. Practice is maintaining what you already know. Training is deliberately working to improve.

Candidates should strive to attend as many regularly scheduled classes as possible. If your schedule allows, consider increasing your training frequency and making your karate a larger part of your weekly routine.

Participate in September’sUechiCon

I would strongly encourage every potential candidate to participate in this year's UechiCon.

UechiCon is much more than a convention. It is where candidates can observe Master's Testing, Black Belt Graduation, senior-level training, and seminars taught by some of the most experienced martial artists in the Uechi community.

For many candidates, attending UechiCon becomes the unofficial beginning of their Black Belt journey.

You will have the opportunity to witness both Master's Testing and Black Belt Graduation firsthand, helping you better understand the standards you are working toward.

Training with these instructors and witnessing the graduation ceremony firsthand provides perspective that simply cannot be duplicated in a regular class environment. The convention has become one of the most valuable preparation tools available to future candidates.

Train at Other Dojos of the uechiryu butokukai

One of the goals of the Black Belt Testing process is to expose candidates to a variety of instructors, training environments, and teaching styles.

Starting in November, the dojos of the association open their doors to various classes to help in increase your knowledge. Whenever possible, take advantage of opportunities to train at other Association dojos.

Participate in Special Training Classes

Beginning in January, the Uechiryu Butokukai will host a series of Black Belt Candidate Training Classes led by senior instructors and master-ranking practitioners from across the Association.

These classes are specifically designed to prepare candidates for the testing process and provide valuable insight from instructors with decades of experience.

Nothing will get you more prepared than taking full advantage of these opportunities.

Important Considerations

Begin Studying Now

The testing process includes more than physical performance.

Candidates will be expected to have a working knowledge of Uechiryu history, terminology, traditions, and curriculum.

The students who begin preparing early consistently perform better throughout the testing cycle.

Understand the Process

The modern Black Belt Testing process is no longer a single-day event - it is a multi-month journey that includes:

  • Cross-training opportunities

  • Special candidate classes

  • Black Belt Testing Preview

  • Performance Review

  • Additional specialized training

  • Written examination

  • Provisional "Ho" status

  • Black Belt Graduation Ceremony

The purpose of this process is not simply to determine whether a student can perform techniques. It is to help candidates develop the mindset, work ethic, and habits expected of their next rank.

What To Do Right Now

Between now and November:

  • Increase your regular training schedule

  • Attend as much of UechiCon as your schedule allows

  • Begin reviewing history and terminology

  • Focus on improving the basics of your Uechiryu

  • Make karate a priority in your weekly schedule

The candidates who are most successful in this process are rarely the ones who consistently show up, train hard, and take advantage of the opportunities available to them.

More details regarding the 2027 Black Belt Testing process will be released in the coming months.

Lastly, for informational and communication purposes, we are asking all potential candidates to fill out the below registration form.

Congratulations on your progress so far. We are looking forward to seeing what you accomplish during this next phase of your training.

As always, please feel free to TEXT or EMAIL ME with any questions.

Sincerely,

Marcus Traynor | Director – Uechiryu Butokukai
